TL;DR: The gap between who you think you are physically and who you actually are is where problems live. Physical and mental fitness are inseparable—you can’t feel mentally sharp while your body feels like garbage. The formula is brutally simple: if you feel terrible, eat better, move more, stop bad habits. Start small, start somewhere—even 20 minutes of walking counts. Your body isn’t Netflix; you can’t ignore it and expect it to work when you need it.

Physical

Here’s something nobody wants to hear: you will always be in better physical shape in your head than you will be in your body.

That gap between who you think you are physically and who you actually are? That’s where problems live.

Use it or lose it (and this time it’s literal)

If you don’t do very much, soon you will be unable to do anything. No matter how much you want to do it.

Your body isn’t like your Netflix subscription. You can’t just ignore it for months and expect it to work perfectly when you finally need it.

You’ll never be the best you can be—the best you can become—if your physical house isn’t in order.

The mind-body connection isn’t woo-woo

To be more mentally fit, you must become more physically fit. And before you ask what one has to do with the other, let me tell you something: I’ve never seen someone who felt mentally or emotionally sharp when they felt like garbage in their body.

Similarly, I’ve never seen someone who was physically fit feel terrible in their body if they were emotionally well.

We all live inside our heads. What we “feel” is a summation of our emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical feelings. They’re not separate systems—they’re one messy, interconnected system.

“A yogi never forgets that health must begin with the body… Physical health is not a commodity to be bargained for. Nor can it be swallowed in the form of drugs and pills… It is something we must build up. You have to create within yourself the experience of beauty, liberation, and infinity. This is health.”

– B.K.S. Iyengar

Start somewhere. Start small.

Here’s some tried-and-true advice: if you don’t feel good and you’re overweight, eat poorly, don’t exercise, collapse on the couch every evening after dinner, drink too much, can’t find energy to do anything, and generally feel like shit—then lose weight, eat better, stop the bad behaviors, and exercise regularly.

I know. Groundbreaking stuff, right?

But here’s the thing—it really isn’t that complicated. We just make it complicated because simple doesn’t sell books or apps or gym memberships.

Becoming the person you want to be, living the life you want to live, doing the work you want to do—all of that requires energy. Being physically fit gives you that energy.

It isn’t absolutely necessary to be in perfect shape to succeed. But it will make your life a whole lot easier and much more enjoyable.

Try to establish a habit of regular cardiovascular exercise. Even 20 minutes. Even walking. Even dancing badly in your dorm room.

Your future self will thank you for every step you take today.

A question for you

What’s one physical habit you could start today that would give your future self more energy?

Remember: becoming the person you want to be requires energy. Being physically fit gives you that energy. Your future self will thank you for every step you take today.

Final Note (From the Future You):

True success is spherical.
It touches every part of your life—your physical realm, your financial realm, your emotional realm, your relational realm, and your spiritual realm.

And the beautiful thing about your life’s journey?

You get to start walking again—any day, any hour, any moment.

You just have to choose the road that lets you bring your whole self along for the ride.
