Skills to Complete for this Week
Leadership
Today’s meeting may require me to listen more than I speak.
It’s important to step back when starting something new and stay open to different people offering new perspectives.
Consider helping the conversation be objective and clear so that all of your people are aligned.
Communication
I tend to feel more comfortable communicating 1:1 and when I have all the facts laid out in front of me.
My meeting with Ben is therefore a likely source of stress for me based on who I am and how I feel about the meeting.
Consider understanding the ‘why’ behind the demands even though I have limited visibility on the details of the ‘what’?
Time Management
I have a heavy load of meetings tomorrow. If I haven’t already, take some time now to look ahead and prepare.
As I know, being more intentional about my calendar (before it’s upon me) can help me manage my energy, gain control and confidence.
Physical Well-Being
When I feel my best, I perform at my best.
Stand up, have a glass of water and take a walk around to get the blood pumping.
Strategic Thinking
Having more confidence to assert myself and my ideas is a key focus for me this week. Stay mindful of this intention and consciously create time to focus strategically on what should be done vs simply coping with what needs to get done.
This week I am a strategist
The Learner
You love to learn. The subject matter that interests you most will be determined by your other themes and experiences, but whatever the subject, you will always be drawn to the process of learning.
The process, more than the content or the result, is especially exciting for you. You are energized by the steady and deliberate journey from ignorance to competence. The thrill of the first few facts, the early efforts to recite or practice what you have learned, the growing confidence of a skill mastered — this is the process that entices you.
Your excitement leads you to engage in adult learning experiences — yoga or piano lessons or graduate classes. It enables you to thrive in dynamic work environments where you are asked to take on short project assignments and are expected to learn a lot about the new subject matter in a short period of time and then move on to the next one.
This Learner theme does not necessarily mean that you seek to become the subject-matter expert or that you are striving for the respect that accompanies a professional or academic credential. The outcome of the learning is less significant than the “getting there.”
How to apply to your week
Work With Learner: Develop ways to track the progress of your learning. If there are distinct levels or stages of learning within a discipline or skill, take a moment to celebrate your progression from one level to the next. If no such levels exist, create them for yourself (e.g., reading five books on the subject or making three presentations on the subject).
Lead With Learner: Be a catalyst for change. Others might be intimidated by new rules, new skills, or new circumstances. Your willingness to soak up this newness can calm their fears and spur them to action. Take this responsibility seriously.
Live With Learner: Time disappears and your attention intensifies when you are immersed in studying or learning. Allow yourself to “follow the trail” by scheduling learning sessions during periods of time that will not be interrupted by pressing engagements.
